In 1978, artist Gilbert Baker from San Francisco created the Rainbow Flag in response to a challenge from Harvey Milk, one of the first openly gay elected officials in the U.S. Harvey asked Baker to come up with a symbol of pride for the gay community — a positive alternative to the pink triangle, a symbol that the Nazis used to target gay individuals.
